Microdermabrasion is a specialized procedure that gently removes the upper layer of skin. Unlike chemical peels and laser treatments, this form of skin rejuvenation stimulates new tissue growth in combination with exfoliation. Dirt, oils and pollutants become trapped in pores, and this makes it hard for the skin to breathe. Lifting away the outer epidermis helps restore pores to a healthier condition, and the body responds to the loss of skin by producing more collagen.
Microdermabrasion helps to improve the overall skin tone, reduce the appearance of dark spots and minimize wrinkles. We strongly suggest this type of skin treatment for those who are experiencing the signs of aging skin.
Loss of Collagen
When we are young, collagen production is at its highest level. This is why children don’t have wrinkles and why their cuts and scrapes heal rapidly. As we age, the loss of collagen in the skin results in wrinkling, more visually apparent stretch marks and enlarged pores that become clogged. Microdermabrasion is a proven technique that can result in smoother skin, a more even skin tone and fewer wrinkles.
How Microdermabrasion Works
This treatment involves the use of a special pressure and vacuum pump that works to remove the top layer of skin. The vacuum draws in the dead or damaged skin cells.
During a consultation at our office, we will look at your problem areas, note the thickness and moisture content of the skin and check the depth of any discolorations. If we decide that microdermabrasion is a suitable treatment for you, we will give you complete details on what to expect.
What Patients Can Expect
This type of treatment generally requires no topical anesthetic. Discomfort is minimal. Depending on the size of the area being treated, the procedure can last from around 20 minutes to more than an hour. Afterwards, the skin will be reddish in color, but this soon dissipates.
In most cases, bandages need not be worn. The client can resume normal activities immediately. However, it’s a good idea to keep the treated area out of contact with direct sunlight for several days.
The treated area will begin to heal immediately, but the full effect of healthier skin growth can take up to a month or more. The main advantage of microdermabrasion is that no surgery is involved and no chemicals are used.
